Benefits

A Closer Look

Lion’s Mane mushroom has a long history of use in traditional food cultures and is widely appreciated for its distinctive appearance and unique nutritional profile.

In Japan, Lion’s Mane is known as Yamabushitake, a name linked to the Yamabushi — mountain ascetic monks who practised Shugendō, a discipline rooted in nature, simplicity and seasonal living. The mushroom’s cascading white form was said to resemble the garments worn by these monks, giving rise to its traditional name.

Historically, Yamabushitake was valued as a seasonal food ingredient, gathered and prepared as part of a simple, nature-connected way of life. Today, Lion’s Mane continues to be appreciated in both culinary and modern wellness contexts.

Lion’s Mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) naturally contain:

  • Beta-glucans and other polysaccharides
  • Terpenoids, such as erinacines and hericenones
  • Amino acids and protein
  • B-vitamins, including B1, B2, B3 and B5
  • Minerals, including potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and zinc
  • Vitamin D2, which may be present in variable amounts depending on growing conditions

Nutritional composition may vary between batches.

What We Can’t Say (but customers often ask us)

Does Lion’s Mane support focus, memory or brain health?
You may see Lion’s Mane discussed online in relation to focus, memory or cognitive performance. However, under UK regulations, food supplements cannot be marketed with claims that they improve brain function or cognitive health unless those claims are specifically authorised. For this reason, we don’t make claims about focus, memory or brain health in relation to this product.

Is Lion’s Mane linked to nerve growth factor (NGF)?
Some scientific research explores compounds found in Lion’s Mane in relation to nerve growth factor (NGF). However, food supplements cannot be sold with claims that they influence nerve growth, brain structure or neurological function. We therefore don’t make claims relating to NGF or neurological outcomes.

Can Lion’s Mane support immunity or gut health?
Claims relating to immune or digestive health must be authorised under UK food supplement regulations. While Lion’s Mane contains naturally occurring polysaccharides such as beta-glucans, we’re not permitted to claim that this product supports immunity or gut health.

Can I take this tincture for a health condition?
This product is sold as a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or medical condition. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking medication, please consult a qualified healthcare professional before use.

Why do other Lion’s Mane products make stronger claims?
Regulations differ by country, and not all brands follow UK advertising standards. We choose to comply fully with UK and ASA guidance, which means avoiding unapproved health or medicinal claims and focusing instead on ingredient quality, sourcing and extraction methods.

So why do people choose Lion’s Mane?
Many people choose Lion’s Mane as part of a balanced lifestyle, valuing its long history of use as a food mushroom, its distinctive composition and the craftsmanship involved in high-quality extraction.

As with any supplement, individual experiences vary.
